Drug Abuse Resistance Education
The Round Lake Park Police Department became involved in the nationally recognized D.A.R.E. program in 1990. Sergeant Bock of the Round Lake Police Department initiated the program at the Murphy Elementary School located in our village.
Every D.A.R.E. Officer is required to attend a two-week course of instruction at the State Police academy in Springfield Illinois.
Officer Kevin MaGee, who you see pictured holding a D.A.R.E. T-shirt, currently teaches the D.A.R.E. program at Murphy school and first began teaching this program in 1992.
The program concentrates on educating students about the dangers of drugs and gang involvement. This program is really a combined proactive effort between the police department and each individual school choosing to participate.
The goal is to inform students and help them to be better prepared to resist the pitfalls that they may encounter during their adolecent years.
Our hope is that we can prevent students from getting involved with drugs or gangs sooner then having to deal with these problems later.
Currently there are about 115 fifth grade students participating in D.A.R.E. classes at the Murphy Elementary School.
